don't be scared

I haven't heard any feedback from the bride of the wedding I shot on Friday, but yesterday I got a call from an unknown number and it was a lady who had been recommended my services. I didn't hear it ring, so she left a voicemail. When I listened to it I got scared. I got sooo nervous when I had to shot that wedding on Friday. I don't want to mess up something that important. We can't just go back a couple days later and say "ok, now... pretend you're getting married and you're REALLY happy and all your family and friends are here smiling at you... GO!" One time thing. One time shot. Its not that I am not capable of doing a good job, but stuff happens. Stuff happens and then my inexperience could come slap me in the face. But, more so, I don't want to ruin something so important for someone.

I put off returning the call and headed to Port Clinton to Rob's. I walked in and laid on the futon and he was sitting on the floor playing Diablo 2 (which he has grown very fond of again since he heard of the projected release of Diablo 3). I told him about the call that I received and he asked if I called back and I said not yet. "Well why not?!" I told him I was scared and I wanted to call tomorrow so I had a chance to think about some things. "What's there to think about? What's going to be different about tomorrow than right now?" I knew he was right, but I kept telling him I was scared. "You don't think I didn't have to call people about studio stuff when I was trying to get stuff done? You just gotta do it and not be scared. People want to pay you for something you're good at, call her back!" I said, the more I do this the less scared I'll be, so I need to just do it. "Fucking finally! Call her!"

So, regardless of my fear, I called back. No answer, but she called me right back. She was really nice. She wants to hire me from 1pm - 7pm on December 6th. We talked for a long time and she was just telling me about her daughter and her life and stuff. She really liked me. She said she was told that I knew someone who did video, with Rob in the room and said to the lady "Actually I DO know someone who does video!" He and I are working on the tennis video together, he is doing editing and video and I am providing some stills for it (the video is 80% stills). So, he's going to be working the wedding too. I will feel better that he's there.

When I hung up Rob told me I did a good job on the phone. I really have gotten a lot more personable as I've gotten older. I know how to tell what people want and what to say within means of what I can provide. It's a good skill to pay attention.
